Studying Gun Violence

Every 11 minutes, another American dies from gun violence. That's 128 people today. Tomorrow. Every single day. Our children experience gun death rates 26x higher than other developed nations. They suffer anxiety increases of 42% from active shooter drills alone. An entire generation grows up traumatized - the "lockdown generation.

Youth Mental Health Impact

Research analyzing 54 million social media posts from 114 schools found active shooter drills cause 42% increases in anxiety and 39% increases in depression, with effects lasting at least 90 days.

Only 37% of children who survive gun violence receive mental health services within six months, Northwell Health creating long-term trauma that compounds across communities.

America's Exceptionalism

the U.S. experiences gun homicide rates 26 times higher than other high-income countries (World Population Review).

Australia's comprehensive 1996 reforms eliminated mass shootings for over two decades (Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation), while Canada maintains relatively high gun ownership with significantly lower violence through comprehensive regulation (cfr, Pew Research Center).

Geographic Disparities in Gun Violence

Washington D.C. (30.6 per 100,000) and Mississippi (28.2 per 100,000) experience gun death rates eight times higher than Massachusetts (3.7 per 100,000) and Hawaii (4.5 per 100,000). (Pew Research Center). Black Americans face gun homicide rates 13 times higher than white Americans, (GIFFORDS), while rural Southern states consistently show the highest overall death rates.
